Sturridge can outscore Rooney for England at World Cup

| 27.11.2013

Daniel Sturridge could add a Samba flavour to his now-traditional goal scoring celebration dance next summer, with the striker a decent shout to be England’s top marksmen at World Cup 2014.

Wayne Rooney remains favourite to be top team goalscorer for England, at odds of 5/2 with Ladbrokes, but it’s the current Liverpool hotshot that looks the more enticing tip.

Sturridge can currently be backed at odds of 7/2 to find the net the most times for the Three Lions in Brazil and given the form he has displayed so far this term, there is every reason to think he can live up to the billing next summer.

The new Anfield favourite has notched up an impressive nine goals in the Premier League so far this season to leave him second only to Sergio Aguero in the goal scorer standings.

His hefty haul has come as part of an impressive run of form for the Reds which has seen the 24-year-old notch up 19 goals in just 26 Premier League outings for Liverpool.

Sturridge has also demonstrated a degree of versatility in front of goal this term, with skilful close control and finishing found in examples like a match-winning strike against Aston Villa, as well as aerial presence, as demonstrated in a last-minute header against Everton.

A prolific goal poacher to boot, the former Chelsea and Manchester City man boasts an all round package to rival that of former England great Gary Lineker – the last Three Lions star to claim a Golden Boot at a World Cup.

Yet if Sturridge is to emulate the Match of the Day presenter and outscore his teammates and potentially the rest in the tournament, he will need to maintain his top flight form.

Lineker came into the 1986 and 1990 World Cups off the back of domestic campaigns for Everton and Spurs that saw him finish as top scorer in the old English First Division and subsequently dominated the scoring for the national team at both finals.

Backed at 8/1 to finish top of the pile in the Premier League goalscoring charts, success at home could lead to even more abroad for the Liverpool forward.
