Tottenham handed favourable Europa League draw against Dnipro

Published:

Tottenham’s day improved marginally as they were able to offset the news that Andre Villas-Boas would no longer be guiding their ship by drawing Ukrainian outfit Dnipro in the Europa League’s round of 32.

Dnipro, who finished second in their group with 10 points after winning three of their six games, will play at home in the first leg and are priced as 2/1 shots to win.

The draw is given a 23/10 chance, while the travelling north London side are the 5/4 favourites to take a lead back to White Hart Lane.

The draw means Spurs remain as 8/1 second favourites to win the competition, with Serie A giants Juventus, who drew Trabzonspor, rated the side to beat at 4/1.

The competition’s other Premier League representative, Swansea, were dealt a far more bitter set of lemons though, with Michael Laudrup’s men drawn against Champions League drop-outs and 10/1 third favourites for Europa League glory, Napoli.

However, Ladbrokes have priced the match up fairly evenly, with the Liberty Stadium side given odds of 9/5 to win the home first-leg, and Rafael Benitez’s side a 7/5 shot and the draw the outsider at 9/4.

The unfavourable draw leaves the south Wales club as 25/1 chances to win the Europa League at the first time of asking.

Unfortunately, though, both Swansea and Tottenham’s chances of progression became much tougher as the draw for the round of 16 was made.

Should Laudrup successfully overcome Napoli over two legs, he’ll have the scant reward of facing the winner of Porto, another Champions League drop-out, or Eintracht Frankfurt in the next round.

Meanwhile, Spurs will do battle with the winner of PAOK or Benfica should they manage to overcome their Ukrainian obstacle.

The Europa League will resume it’s charms with the first legs being played on February 20th.
