Lack of game time could force Bayern star into Man Utd move
Published:If picking up a player of Juan Mata’s quality lifted the low spirits around Manchester United this January transfer window, then being linked with a Champions League winner with six Bundesliga medals to his name will surely send them stratospheric.
According to former Bayern Munich and Germany great, Oliver Kahn, that’s exactly what could be in store. He revealed that Munich midfielder Bastian Schweinsteiger may be tempted to trade in the only shirt he’s ever known for the red of United this summer.
The Daily Mail reports that the 86-capped stopper told German publication kicker that he would totally understand if the midfielder were to vacate the Allianz Arena.
“If you have an offer from a club like Bayern, Barca or Manchester United, you have to accept it,” Kahn said.
309 Bayern Munich appearances hasn’t counted in Schweinsteiger’s favour as far as Pep Guardiola is concerned, preferring to use one-time full-back Philip Lahm in midfield over the blonde 29-year-old. Young upstarts like Toni Kroos and Mario Gotze have also enjoyed regularly playing time under the Spaniard.
United have long been linked with the German grass-coverer, including as recently as last summer, but it’s thought with appearances in the Bundesliga dwindling – Schweinsteiger has made just 10 this season – a move abroad could finally tempt the player to part ways with his boyhood club.
Having added Mata to their number, United’s 12/5-rated chances of finishing the season in the top four have been seriously boosted and, with David Moyes claiming the Spaniard’s arrival from Chelsea isn’t the last this January, Schweinsteiger could be joining a far more formidable outfit come the end of the campaign.
Mata is set to make his United bow against Cardiff, with the Old Trafford side rated as 1/4 shots to win the game, with their new number eight 5/1 to mark his debut with the game’s opening goal.
