Pepe Mel turns to La Liga to end West Brom’s current woes

West Brom could yet launch a last gasp bid to bring Getafe attacker Pedro Leon to the club, as manager Pepe Mel attempts to steer the Baggies away from relegation.

The Midlands club are 6/1 to go down following their 4-3 away defeat to local rivals Aston Villa, a result that has left the team just three points off the drop zone.

It means that the Baggies have now gone four games without a win, while Mel has yet to oversee a West Brom victory, as part of a miserable run in his managerial career which extends to his previous stint with Real Betis – where he was sacked.

However the 50-year-old has not given up hope of rescuing the club’s season, with the Spaniard revealing his plans, earlier today, to delve back into the transfer market before the end of the month.

“One result doesn’t change the opinion about the squad but if we have the chance to sign a player during the transfer window I believe we should do,” he told reporters.

Former Los Blancos star Pedro Leon could very well fit the bill, having previously caught the eye of Mel during his spell in charge of Betis.

The 27-year-old would certainly add some attacking edge to a squad that has struggled in recent weeks without the injured Stephane Sessegnon.

And with Getafe enduring their own miserable run in La Liga, the winger could well be tempted to swap sunny Spain for the bright lights of the Premier League.

No formal bid has yet been tabled, but with time fast running out, West Brom will need to move quickly if they want to acquire an attacker with experience at the highest level in Spain.

And should he agree to move to the Hawthorns then the Baggies could soon find themselves boing-boinging up the table, with Ladbrokes offering 1/9 on them staying up and 9/2 on the club securing a top 10 finish.
