Three men who could fill Vidic’s sizeable shoes at Man United

| 07.02.2014

It’s cheerless news indeed for the Manchester United faithful that their long-serving captain and centre-back of choice will be leaving after seven incredibly successful seasons at the club.

However, using the glass half-full assessment of the situation, there will now be space for a new colossus in the centre of the Man United defence and boy do they need it.

Luckily for United, Vidic will be back from suspension against a hapless-looking Fulham at Old Trafford in their next Premier League game, where his side are a solid-looking 4/6 to keep the Cottagers out.

So, when David Moyes begins the search in earnest for ‘the next Vidic’ where exactly should he be looking? Here’s three possible replacements, do you agree?

Eliaquim Mangala – Porto

The headline act of the trio, Porto’s 22-year-old Frenchman has been heavily linked with a move to the Premier League in recent times, with Manchester City fronting the queue.

He’d cost a pretty penny, but if United could snare him they’d be getting a man mountain in the Vidic mould with athleticism to match.

Mehdi Benatia – Roma

After securing a move to Roma from Udinese in the summer, the Moroccan international has become a bedrock of Serie A’s meanest defence.

At 26, Benatia is a defender who could offer United his peak years and like the man he would be replacing, chips in with some goals – five so far this season already in fact.

Simon Kjaer – Lille

Lille’s 24-year-old Danish centre-back has long been touted as a star of the future and he’s really come to the boil this season in Ligue 1.

Kjaer is part of the French top-flight’s most formidable defence and has already earned 30 caps for his native Denmark.
