Mourinho intent on luring former Real Madrid ally to Chelsea
Published:Jose Mourinho will tell anyone who’ll listen that his Chelsea side are not favourites for the title, incomplete and better suited to a run at glory next season.
However, things could be a little different next season should Mourinho get his way this summer and land the striker he’s been pining for.
That won’t stop him looking at other areas to strengthen his squad though, with a raid on former club Real Madrid’s central-midfield stocks also on the cards.
Sami Khedira was signed for Los Blancos from Stuttgart by the Portuguese maestro at the start of the 2010/11 campaign and made 78 league appearances (126 in all competitions) under the Special One during their time together.
A torn ACL last November ruled him out for the remainder of the current season, but he had only missed three matches under new coach Carlo Ancelotti prior to the blow.
That indicates the Italian rates the defensive midfielder quite highly, meaning any potential deal would have to suit the Bernabeu-dwellers financially.
That’s not to say, however, that the rumour is a complete no-hoper, as Cristiano Ronaldo and co haven’t lost a single game since the German suffered his setback, with Angel Di Maria filling in alongside Xabi Alonso and Luka Modric to form an effective midfield trio.
With Madrid coping so well without the 26-year-old and Asier Illarramendi available as a young, ready-made replacement, Ancelotti could see it as the perfect time to cash in on Chelsea’s interest.
Khedira would certainly be of use to Chelsea too, with John Obi Mikel little-used these days and Frank Lampard approaching the top of the hill.
The 44-cap international could therefore freshen up the Blues’ central midfield, in tandem with new arrival Nemanja Matic, to provide a double-glazed screen infront of the back four.
