Torres homecoming may land Chelsea sought after Atletico star

Fernando Torres may still be an enigma in a Chelsea shirt, but at the club where he made his name as a floppy-haired teenage scoring sensation, El Nino is regarded as a demigod.

Several footballing moons later, the special relationship Torres enjoys with Atletico Madrid and their fans just might end up paying Chelsea back for some of the £50m bounty shelled out for his services just over three seasons ago.

There are rumours afoot that 29-year-old Torres is going to be used as a makeweight to try and lure current Atletico goal-scoring machine, Diego Costa to Stamford Bridge in the summer.

Jose Mourinho has made no secret of his desires to add to his current Chelsea squad, labelling it as ‘incomplete’ after their disappointing 1-1 draw at West Brom shone the spotlight on the need for a new striker.

As a result of those dropped points, Mourinho’s little horses have fallen back behind Manuel Pellegrini’s shire horses in the title picture at 6/4, and 11/10 respectively.

Brazilian-born Costa has taken La Liga by storm this season where he has plundered 20 goals already, just two shy of Cristiano Ronaldo’s current tally, so it’s no surprise to see him being courted by clubs of Chelsea’s ilk.

Those goals have helped Atletico become genuine title contenders alongside the maelstrom of Real Madrid and Barcelona, where the triumvirate are locked together on 57 points apiece.

However, even though Diego Simeone’s side are second on goal difference they are still considered the big 13/2 outsiders to claim the title.

Although Chelsea will have their work cut-out to prise the Spanish international away from the Vincente Calderon, the Blues have never been shy of waving the wallet in the transfer market before.
