Liverpool skipper should have gone whole hog with Rodgers praise

| 18.03.2014

Brendan Rodgers is quite rightly the toast of Merseyside after masterminding Manchester United’s humiliation at Old Trafford and getting Liverpool back in the hunt for a first English league title in 24 years.

This clearly hasn’t escaped the attentions of Liverpool’s on-field general, Steven Gerrard, who has heaped praise on the Northern Irishman following one of the best weekends in his own glittering career.

“He has been a revelation,” said the 33-year-old. “He keeps tinkering and tweaking formations, making little changes to personnel and pulls it off.

“You go out feeling full of confidence and belief. His one-on-one management is the best I’ve known.”

Gerrard went on to suggest the club’s hierarchy should act quickly to tie Rodgers to a new deal, as the former Swansea boss is only contracted to the end of the 2014/15 season as it stands.

Given Liverpool’s current position back among the Premier League’s elite for the first time in five seasons, anything other than the club offering a new and improved deal for Rodgers seems ludicrous.

A win at relegation-threatened Cardiff next time out – where the Reds are the 4/9 favourites to win – could see them move within a point of leaders Chelsea with a game in hand, if the Blues lose at home to Arsenal in the lunchtime kick-off.

This begs the question whether or not Gerrard could have gone a step further than labelling Rodgers the ‘best man-manager’ and just said what everyone else was thinking and name him as THE best in the Premier League era at Anfield.

Gerrard Houllier and Rafa Benitez harbour strong claims having both won European and domestic trophies, whilst finishing runner-up in the Premier League once apiece, but Kenny Dalglish’s second coming, which ended with the sack, blemishes the Liverpool icon’s standing somewhat.

However, the brand of football Liverpool are playing right now already singles Rodgers out as the cream of the crop at Anfield in the last 20 years, especially considering he took over a team which had just finished eighth.

The sky is the limit for a coach who is still only 41-years-old.
