MotoGP: Pol Esparago bids to emulate Marc Marquez’s heroics

| 19.03.2014

Repsol Honda star Marc Marquez made history when becoming the youngest champion in MotoGP history last season and the first rookie in 35 years to take the title.

And while the Spaniard looks a good bet at 10/11 to retain his crown it’s one of his fellow countrymen who could represent outstanding value.

Last year’s Moto2 champion Pol Esparago is an interesting 80/1 each-way shout for the title as he steps up to the premier class.

The Yamaha Tech 3 rider will bid to follow in the footsteps of Marquez and make an impact in his first season at the highest level.

Esparago took the second-tier title in 2013, landing six Grand Prix victories in the process, including the season opener in Qatar.

The younger brother of NGM Mobile Forward Racing cyclist Aleix is 100/1 to secure victory at the same venue in his first test amongst the elite of the sport.

But given the 22-year-old’s precocious talent it would be no surprise to see the Catalunyan rider find his way onto the podium and upset those odds.

Esparago made his own piece of history when he became the youngest ever driver to score a point in a Grand Prix when finishing 13th in the 125cc division aged just 15 years and 8 days old back in 2006.

And despite recently suffering a broken collarbone in pre-season testing, Esparago fully expects to race in Qatar and announce himself on the biggest stage.

Pol recorded the second-fastest lap time behind Aleix in the final test session before sustaining his injury and while he may not be at full fitness on this occasion, don’t be too surprised to see his Tech 3 bike challenging for maximum points throughout the season.
