Parry’s emergence can aid England’s World Twenty20 assault

Debutant Stephen Parry took all the headlines as England levelled their one-day international series with West Indies and there could be even more success to come for the Lancashire star.

With conditions in the West Indies suiting spin the tourists replaced seamer Chris Jordan with the left-arm spinner and the move paid dividends as the 28-year-old had a debut to remember taking 3-32 from his 10 overs.

And with another ODI on Wednesday – which England are the 4/5 favourites to win – and three T20 clashes in the Caribbean before the squad moves onto Bangladesh for the World Twenty20, Parry is a name we could be hearing a lot more about with conditions expected to suit the spinning ball.

While the Lancashire man’s call-up to the England squad for this series and the World Twenty20 came as somewhat of a surprise to many, he is well know on the county circuit for his prowess in the shorter formats of the game.

In particular his performances in the English T20 competition, where he has taken 63 wickets at an average of 22 in 56 appearances for Lancashire, have kept him in the minds of the national selectors.

England have been searching for spinner to take the mantle in the shorter form of the game without success as first Danny Briggs and then Scott Borthwick tried to fill something of a spin void.

Graeme Swann’s retirement has further decreased England’s spinning options but Parry’s emergence will have pleased coach, and former left-arm spinner himself, Ashley Giles as they look to build a side to win capable of winning a second ICC tournament.

Stuart Broad’s side are 10/1 to repeat the success they enjoyed by winning the World Twenty20 in the West Indies and Parry should play a key role in Bangladesh.

In 2010, Michael Yardy’s economical left-arm spin was a huge asset to Paul Collingwood on their way to glory on slow, low pitches and Parry, who has a similar style to the Sussex spinner, could be a key component of Broad’s spin attack alongside James Tredwell and all-rounders Joe Root and Moeen Ali.

While this has been a winter of huge discontent for English cricket, Parry’s promising display could be a huge silver lining for England’s limited-overs set-up as they bid for World Twenty20 glory.
