IPL Betting: Super Kings are a force to be reckoned with in the IPL

Published:

Ahead of the start of the seventh edition of the IPL we are joined by Ladbrokes’ Oliver Day as he gives us the hard-hitting views from the training floor on this year’s T20 tournament.

With defending champions Mumbai’s clash with 2012 winners Kolkata getting things started at the IPL, Oliver gives us his views on whether the Indians can become just the second team to win back-to-back titles.

He also assesses the chances of 7/2 favourites Chennai and whether Kevin Pietersen can have the desired effect at Delhi as they search for a first win in the history of the competition.

On whether Chennai Super Kings are worthy favourites for this year’s edition of the IPL…

Oliver Day says: We believe Chennai have the most professional outfit this time around and with Stephen Fleming and MS Dhoni at the helm they will once again be a force to be reckoned with. They’ve also made some shrewd signings this season with Faf du Plessis coming into the squad. With Chennai you know that when the tournament gets to the business end they will be there or thereabouts. And at 7/2 that makes them an excellent bet.

On whether Mumbai Indians can become the second side in history to win back-to-back IPL titles…

OD says: Mumbai have not had a good enough auction to claim back-to-back IPL titles in my opinion. We are 6/1 for them to go all the way and so far that has not been popular with customers. They have lost some real key players with Dwayne Smith and Sachin Tendulkar big holes to fill. The Mumbai middle order looks strong and with Corey Anderson and Kieron Pollard they have two very powerful hitters but Mumbai’s chances will revolve around their top order. With Lasith Malinga and Harbhajan Singh in their attack they will not struggle for wickets but they have to fill an opening batsman slot which could prove difficult.

On KP and his bid to lead Delhi to a first IPL title…

OD says: Who knows what’s going to happen with KP in charge? He could galvanise the team but at the same time he could easily ruffle a few feathers and divide the Daredevils squad. They’ve certainly got the players to mount a very strong challenge and I think one of the main things with Delhi is the consistency they will have in selection. With the likes of JP Duminy and Dinesh Karthik alongside KP in the batting line-up and a strong bowling attack they seem to have all the ingredients to go well.

On who will be the surprise package of the tournament…

OD says: As a department we made Rajasthan a lot shorter than compared to where the market is but a problem for them is that they are not playing any of their matches at the Sawai Mansingh Stadium this year. It’s been a fortress for them in recent so it’s a big loss for them but they still have a team that can compete and they look a little over priced.
