Mayweather keen to purchase beleaguered NBA franchise
Floyd Mayweather Jr may be the overriding favourite to defeat Marcos Maidana at the MGM Grand Arena in Las Vegas but Pretty Boy could be in danger of taking his eyes off the prize after revealing grand plans to bid for the LA Clippers franchise.
Ladbrokes is offering odds of 1/10 on another Money victory with the man lauded as the greatest fighter of our generation looking to extend his record to 46-0 against the Argentine underdog, who heads into this encounter having already lost three times in his career.
But while Money may be confident of scoring another victory here, he would be wise to keep his head in the game rather than wading into the ongoing debate surrounding the future of the LA Clippers.
The NBA franchise has been at the centre of a storm this week, with owner Donald Sterling banned from the sport for life and ordered to sell his stake in the team after he was recorded making a series of racist comments.
And one man already throwing his hat into the ring to take over the Clippers is Mayweather, with the fighter planning to team up as part of a consortium to buy the outfit.
The 37-year-old admitted as much during a recent interview, where he should have perhaps instead been talking up the Maidana clash.
“Do I want to buy the Clippers? Yes I do. I can bring together a group of people who can afford it,” he told reporters.
“Buying a major league franchise is something I want to add to our growing Mayweather Promotions business, which is no longer only about boxing.”
While such a solution may be welcomed by Clippers’ supporters, it appears that any deal is some way off completion.
In the meantime, Mayweather can tune in to watch his potential charges later, with the LA side in action against the Golden State Warriors and 5/6 for victory against their hosts, who are evens for the win on the night.
