Redknapp plots QPR reunion with Man Utd and Chelsea free agents

| 26.05.2014

Following their promotion straight back to the top flight, QPR have been strongly linked with what would be one of the summer’s most intriguing double transfers, as reports suggest the west Londoners have offered contracts to former Harry Redknapp disciples Rio Ferdinand and Frank Lampard.

The R’s, who are 1/3 to stay up next term, would be getting both 35-year-old’s without paying a transfer fee, as Ferdinand has effectively been released by Manchester United and Lampard is out of contract at Chelsea.

It is not yet confirmed that Lampard will leave Stamford Bridge, but were he to sever his 13-year connection with the Blues then Loftus Road seems a likely next destination.

Lampard is Redknapp’s nephew and the midfielder came through the West Ham ranks, alongside centre-half Ferdinand, during his uncle’s seven-year tenure in the Upton Park hotseat.

Both were sold at the start of the century for combined fees of almost £30m, having helped the east enders put down Premier League roots, with a fifth-place finish in 1999 the lofty peak of their achievements.

The pair have gone on to win nine Premier League titles, four FA Cups and two Champions Leagues between them since, and boast a combined total of 184 England caps.

Such experience would be a dream for the R’s to acquire, and while other offers are expected to come in for Ferdinand and Lampard – including from the MLS – a chance to prolong their Premier League careers in their native capital may prove particularly alluring.

The Chelsea man will be in with a chance of adding to his 103-cap international tally in Brazil, having been named in Roy Hodgson 23-man England squad and can be backed at 40/1 to be the top scorer in the Three Lions’ Group D.
