Colombia v Uruguay: La Celeste toothless without Suarez

Published:

The World Cup has proven a microcosm of the Premier league so far with Luis Suarez hitting the headlines for both his sublime skill and mind-numbing stupidity.

Fifa have handed down a four-month ban from world football ruling him out of the remainder of the World Cup and the start of the Premier League and Champions League campaigns.

With that in mind Colombia will go into their second-round meeting with La Celeste as 11/10 favourites for the win, while Suarez’s team-mates can be backed at 5/2 for all three points or 23/10 to secure a draw.

As part of a list of three best bets James Curtis ponders who can fill Suarez’s boots as the headline maker this weekend.

James Rodriguez to score first @ 5/1

Call him James, Hamez or J-Rod whatever you like the Colombia hitman will continue to find the back of the net.

The Monaco man has netted in all three of his country’s games at the World Cup so far has opened the scoring in five games for club and country this season.

With Colombia ending Uruguay’s six-game unbeaten run over them with a 2-0 victory in their last meeting confidence of victory will be high and Rodriguez looks the most likely to ride that wave to glory.

Edinson Cavani to score anytime @ 2/1

Cavani bemoans playing second fiddle to Zlatan Ibrahimovic at club level and is forced to operate in  the Suarez shadow on the international scene so should Luis miss this game it will be the PSG man’s perfect time to shine.

If Suarez is absent then Cavani will be the main man in attack and the chance to treble your money on a man that has netted 23 times in his last 43 games – all while accommodating Zlatan and Suarez – should be too good to ignore.

Over 2.5 goals to be scored @ 23/20

Taking into account the likelihood of the above men scoring, and given the fact that just one of the last eight meetings between the two has ended all square – over 2.5 goals looks a guarantee.

Three of more goals have been scored in six of those eight games, while Colombia’s last five overall have seen over 2.5 as did Uruguay’s opening two matches of the tournament.
