French Open day 9: Monfils to end Wawrinka conqueror’s party

Published:

Day nine at the French Open follows on from the start of the nitty, gritty matches, as the business end of the tournament fast approaches in both the men’s and women’s draw.

Novak Djokovic has already faced Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, while Maria Sharapova and Samantha Stosur have clashed in the women’s competition.

Below we pick out the best three bets of the day, starting with the dance-loving Gael Monfils:

Gael Monfils to beat Guillermo Garcia-Lopez @ 4/7

Garcia-Lopez ended Australian Open champion Stan Wawrinka’s involvement in the first round at Roland Garros, but will have his own stay at the tournament cut short when he faces Monfils in the fourth round.

The Spaniard hasn’t been tested to a great degree since claiming the Swiss’ scalp, but has dropped at least one set on his way to this point of the tournament so far.

World number 28 Monfils has won three of the pair’s five meetings to date, including both times they’ve duelled on clay. Expect him to advance.

Simona Halep to win 2-0 over Sloane Stephens @ 8/13

American youngster Stephens is a 3/1 shot to overcome her fourth-seeded opponent with Ladbrokes, which shows the magnitude of the task she’s facing.

All of the previous three tussles between these two have been settled in two sets and Halep has been in supreme form in reaching the fourth round, never dropping more than four games in any set to this point.

Stephens has the better of the head-to-head record, but lost to the Romanian in their only meeting on the dirt so far.

Kiki Bertens to beat Andrea Petkovic @ 11/8

Petkovic, the German world number 27, faces Dutch qualifier Bertens as the heavy favourite to progress to the quarter finals.

However, the Yugloslavian born right-hander isn’t immune to suffering an upset, having lost five times in her previous 11 singles tournaments to players the betting market gave little chance to.

Bertens has only lost five of the 24 clay-court matches she’s played on either tour this season and will go into the match full of confidence knowing she has nothing to lose.
