Robben and RVP offer Dutch delight for World Cup golden boot
Published:Thomas Muller’s sensational hat-trick against Portugal may have put the German in pole position to retain the Golden Boot he won at the 2010 World Cup in South Africa, but having already upset the odds against Spain, Holland could shake things up in the top scorer market.
Fresh from both bagging braces against the holders, Arjen Robben and Robin Van Persie are both better priced for the award, to the extent that it could pay to back the pair to pip Thomas Muller to top spot in the scoring charts.
Muller is 11/4 for top scorer having gone one better than his Dutch rivals in Germany’s opener, but at 7/1 and with a game against Australia in the offing, it would be dangerous to dismiss Van Persie.
The Manchester United man appears to have benefitted from a stop-start season in the Premier League and after topping the scoring charts in the UEFA section of qualifying with 11 goals, he’s too good to ignore.
RVP looked particularly sharp against Spain, with his diving lob header against La Roja among the best Dutch goals seen at a World Cup since the heady days of Dennis Bergkamp.
Australia could make for easy pickings too, with the Socceroos putting in a brave but defensively naive performance against Chile, conceding three goals to the South Americans who were far from their imperious best.
Ange Postecoglou was brought in after Australia lost back-to-back games 6-0 to Brazil and France respectively and it wouldn’t be a massive shock to see a repeat against a Holland team that beat Hungary 8-1.
RVP isn’t the only Dutchman that could be worth backing with Robben out at 16/1 to be the top scorer, despite scoring twice against Spain.
The Bayern Munich man could run riot against Australia, before taking on a Chile side that still managed to ship a goal against the unfancied Socceroos.
Having scored 21 goals for the Bavarians last term, spreading your money across the Holland pair could pay dividends should Muller stumble.
