Arsenal should jump at the chance to offload Spanish deadwood

| 23.07.2014

Arsenal midfielder Santi Cazorla has been bleating for some time that he wants out of the Emirates and now Arsene Wenger has the perfect opportunity to grant the Spaniard his wish.

With La Liga champions Atletico Madrid trying to stop their title-winning squad being stripped to the bone by the Premier League’s piranhas, Diego Simeone is also on the recruitment drive.

Top scorer Diego Costa and first-choice left-back Filipe Luis have already been pilfered by Chelsea , while rumours abound that Manchester United are among the clubs courting centre-back Miranda.

The fact last season’s Champions League finalists are already the 12/1 third-favourites to defend their title shows the difficulty of the situation facing their manager.

That search for added flesh has reportedly led to interest in Gunners’ wantaway Cazorla and the added bonus for Arsenal fans is that Nacho Monreal is also on the hit list.

Monreal, 28, has failed to make any kind of lasting impression on the first team as Kieran Gibbs’ deputy, begging the question as to exactly what Wenger saw in the Malaga man in the first place?

The fact Monreal currently collects £60k per week only adds to the appeal of offloading him at this juncture with plenty of time to replace the misfit in this transfer window.

In contrast, there’s no doubting that Cazorla’s a top talent, who on his day, can provide a piece of magic like he did with a screaming free-kick in the FA Cup final to light the touch paper on Arsenal’s historic comeback.

However, the diminutive attacker turns 30 in December and his form has been intermittent this past season.

Now he has shown a willing desire to leave, it makes perfect sense for Arsenal to cash in.
