Arsenal Trophy Specials: Can Wenger build another Double winning side?
Arsenal finally ended their trophy drought last season with their extra-time FA Cup final victory over Hull and things are shaping up nicely for another successful campaign.
The Gunners have already made strong additions to their squad with the captures of Alexis Sanchez and Mathieu Debuchy complimenting an already solid platform.
And with Arsene Wenger seemingly conducing his transfer business early this summer – Colombian goalkeeper David Ospina looks set to be the next name through the door at the Emirates Stadium – the Ashburton Grove faithful are confident of even greater success this season.
The likes of Sami Khedira, William Carvalho, Edinson Cavani and Mario Balotelli have all been linked with moves to the club as Wenger continues building a squad capable of sustaining a Premier League title challenge and Ladbrokes are 7/5 for Arsenal to win any major trophy (excluding the Community Shield).
With a holding midfielder a must during this transfer window the FA Cup winners, who are 13/2 to add the Premier League title this year, have courted Real Madrid star Khedira but wage demands could mean moves for either Carvalho or Southampton’s French midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin.
If the French manager can tempt any of the three reported targets to the red half of north London then the glory days could well and truly be back at the Emirates with Arsenal 40/1 with Ladbrokes to win a Premier League and FA Cup double.
But with the Champions League one of biggest omissions from Wenger’s – and Arsenal’s – CV, the Gunners, who are 1/3 to go without silverware this season will be desperate for European glory.
With Olivier Giroud at times ploughing a loan furrow last season Wenger could look to bring in even more firepower before the transfer window slams shut and another world class striker could propel them into the upper echelons of Champions League contenders.
Arsenal, who are 20/1 for European Cup glory, will so far be delighted with their work this summer but pull a Khedira and a Cavani out of the hat and odds of a Champions League and Premier League double at 100/1 could not be too far away.
A repeat of the Manchester United’s treble achievement in 1999 is available at 500/1 with the bookmaker, while an unprecedented quadruple in north London is available at odds of 2000/1, an outcome that would probably need Le Professor to loosen his purse strings even more.
