US Open next major target for Djokovic after ending Slam rut
Published:After eventually overcoming Roger Federer in an epic five-set Wimbledon final, Novak Djokovic now has his sights on regaining the US Open crown.
Djokovic dug deep to deny his Swiss opponent, eventually winning through 6-7 6-4 7-6 5-7 6-4 to thwart Federer’s bid for an 18th Grand Slam title.
And having now ended a run of three straight Grand Slam final defeats the new world number one is 7/4 to add to his major haul and land the US Open for the second time in his career next month.
Going on to achieve success in New York would echo the Serbian’s success of three years ago.
Djokovic triumphed on SW19’s centre court back in 2011 before defeating Rafael Nadal in the Big Apple in a near faultless year where he captured three of the four majors.
With fresh doubts surrounding defending US champion Nadal and other top-level opponents, including Andy Murray, the stage is set for Djokovic to repeat his previous exploits.
The former of the aforementioned pair saw off his rival to be crowned the champion in Flushing Meadows last year.
However, Djokovic has beaten Nadal twice without dropping a set in their hardcourt meetings since then.
Can Djok shock the world and beat Federer’s record?
In the longer-term future, Ladbrokes have been busy pricing up odds about Djokovic emulating the overall career success of Federer.
The bookmaker make the 27-year-old a 33/1 shot to win seven or more Wimbledon titles, an outcome that’s difficult to envisage.
Meanwhile, the 14/1 quoted on Djokovic to match or surpass Federer’s current record of 17 Grand Slam victories appears to be a more realistic option.
Capturing a second US Open title would make further inroads into the Swiss legend’s major haul while a fourth straight Australian Open success for Novak in early 2015 – also on at 7/4 – would then see the Serb one Slam shy of double figures.
