Breaking Bets: Man Utd cast-off gets big quote for Palace opener

Published:

They say you should never go back, but it seems Wilfried Zaha had few other options bar returning to Crystal Palace on loan just over a year after leaving for an ultimately disappointing stint at Manchester United.

Zaha’s not the only Eagles returnee this weekend, as Neil Warnock is back at a club he abandoned in favour of QPR in 2010 ahead of Palace’s trip to Newcastle, for which Alan Pardew’s side are 3/4 to grab their first Premier League win of the season at the expense of the pointless London outfit.

Warnock’s first piece of business was to bring the winger in for the season from the north-west giants, with Zaha priced at 4/1 to notch at any stage of the 90 on Tyneside.

However, a craftier way to profit from the St James’ Park clash could be through Ladbrokes’ ‘Breaking Bets’ series, which sees Zaha’s first-scorer odds against the Magpies boosted from 12/1 to 14/1.

The 21-year-old was a dab hand at cracking the scoring safe during his previous spell at Palace, with a whopping eight of his first 10 strikes for the club breaking deadlocks in their respective fixtures.

In fact, only four of the Ivory Coast-born England international’s 18 goals were not Palace’s first in their respective matches, while three of those four were second strikes in Zaha braces.

That means Zaha was beaten to the punch by a teammate only once in 14 goalscoring appearances for the South Norwood side, while the fact that two of his last four Palace goals before leaving for Old Trafford were openers further suggests that this is a bet for the shrewdies.

However, punters looking to back Palace at 4/1 should be aware that Newcastle are currently on a four-game winning streak against their next opponents, dating back to the 2009/10 season.

Pardew’s Geordies are 8/1 to come from behind and win on their own patch.
