From Anderson to Borini: 5 stars left in Premier League limbo

Transfer deadline day may have featured late deals for the likes of Danny Welbeck and Hatem Ben Arfa but for a fateful few players, those long-mooted moves failed to materialise, leaving said stars in a state of Premier League limbo.

Unlikely to feature much for their current top-flight employers, in each instance it may be a case of taking on a bit-part role in Capital One Cup fixtures before heading off to pastures new in January.

With that in mind, here are five of the biggest and best players facing an uncertain future.

Mohamed Salah – Chelsea

Seemingly signed by Jose Mourinho after showing the temerity to score against the Blues for previous club Basel in the Champions League, Salah looks unlikely to feature much for Chelsea this term, having made just 12 appearances for the club, with six of these coming as a substitute.

The 22-year-old was reportedly offered to several clubs during the summer, with Inter Milan coming close to making an offer for the Egyptian, only to ultimately pass up on a deal for the player.

Fabio Borini – Liverpool

For long stretches of the summer it appeared that Borini was all set to sign for Sunderland on a permanent basis, having spent last season on loan at the Stadium of Light, scoring 10 goals in 40 games for the Black Cats.

But as time wore on it became apparent that something about the move didn’t appeal to the Italian, who then appeared to be heading to Queens Park Rangers on deadline day only for that move to collapse after the London club refused to meet his wage demands.

Anderson – Manchester United

Shipped out to Fiorentina on loan last season, many Manchester United fans must have thought they had seen the last of the Brazilian. However when the Serie A side opted against making the move a permanent one, Anderson found himself back at Old Trafford.

Louis van Gaal appeared keen to give him an opportunity, however, and the 26-year-old started against MK Dons. The 4-0 loss that followed may have been enough to convince the Dutchman to sell but with Burnley reportedly trying and failing to launch a bid, he has remained at the club.

Scott Sinclair – Manchester City

Earlier in the summer Sinclair signalled his intention to leave the Etihad in search of first team football, but it would appear that few in the Premier League were willing to oblige, with reports suggesting Newcastle rejected the opportunity to sign the 25-year-old.

With West Brom also ruling out a move after Sinclair endured a dismal loan spell at the Hawthorns, Swansea were expected to swoop for the winger. But with no deal forthcoming, the Englishman looks set to stay firmly rooted on the Manchester City bench.

Roberto Soldado – Tottenham

Despite the assurances of manager Mauricio Pochettino that Soldado has a future at the club, it was widely believed that Spurs were open to the idea of cutting their losses on the £26m striker, who netted just six times in the Premier League for the Lilywhites last term.

Early in the summer the Spaniard was linked with a move to Inter Milan while Juventus were also thought to be considering a bid. But with both sides opting for alternative targets, deadline day reports had Soldado moving to Monaco to replace Radamel Falcao. In the end, he stayed put.
