Courtois’ Chelsea coronation brings Cech’s January exit closer

| 12.09.2014

While the rumour mill shuts for some well-earned post transfer window maintenance we concentrate on the likely ramifications of Thibaut Courtois’ new Chelsea contract on poor old Petr Cech.

The long-term Blues keeper had early made promises he wouldn’t stick around to play second fiddle to the new kid on the block and in light of Courtois’ new five-year deal, Cech will surely find fresh employment come January.

Ignoring the Jose-Mourinho-will-now-keep-Courtois-on-the-bench-having-snared-him conspiracy theories, here are three potential destinations Cech may already be leafing through the brochures for:

Ligue 1’s nouveau riche club have been consistently linked with acquiring Cech’s signature, but the general assumption is that under the rules of FFP, the principality must rein in its spending.

Furthermore, the high-profile summer departures of Claudio Ranieri, Radamel Falcao, James Rodriguez and Eric Abidal have lessened the club’s previous sex appeal considerably.

Financially it could be rewarding, but seriously challenging for major honours would in all likelihood be off the menu.

Borussia Dortmund

Joining Germany’s secondary powerhouses however, looks a far more fulfilling prospect for the former Rennes keeper.

Under the guidance of Jurgen Klopp Dortmund have become a force in European football once again and Cech would certainly be viewed as an improvement on regular number one Roman Weidenfeller, 34.

Paris St-Germain

Given Monaco’s damaging personnel exodus, joining PSG would all-but guarantee another league winners’ medal for the Czech international – where Laurent Blanc’s mob are 1/12 to bag a third consecutive title.

The French giants should offer a crack at Champions League glory as well, though he’d have to scrap with Italy’s number two Salvatore Sirigu for the gloves.

Even so, Cech would be expected to win that battle given the reputation he brings from his time
hoarding trophies with Chelsea.
