Fresh comments make MLS striker’s move to QPR elementary

Some abrupt words from FC Toronto’s president suggest Jermain Defoe’s stint in the MLS may end up being a very short one, with QPR the favourites to offer the striker a route back to the Premier League in January.

Defoe only moved to Toronto’s MLS franchise in January of this year following a second spell at Tottenham and has since scored 11 times in 16 appearances for his new club.

However it was towards the end of the summer transfer window when his head was turned by QPR manager Harry Redknapp, who he’s twice signed for in the past, firstly at Portsmouth before again joining him back at White Hart Lane.

Speaking on deadline day Redknapp revealed concerted efforts to sign the 31-year-old before the window had shut would hopefully not be in vein.

“There is every chance he will come in January. He was keen to come. We agreed a deal with Toronto but they wouldn’t release him now,” said Redknapp.

But now the deal has been given even more legs by the latest comments from understandably irate Toronto FC president, Tim Leiweke, who carved the way for the striker’s £90k-per-week deal.

Leiweke told press: “I personally don’t think Defoe will come back. I think if he doesn’t want to be here, you get rid of him.” If you don’t want to be here, get the hell out of our way.”

While this is bad news for the Canadian-based outfit the curt words will ring sweetly in the ears of QPR fans who have seen their side toil in front of goal so far this season.

Despite registering the second most shots in the Premier League ahead of their fourth encounter of the campaign at Manchester United, Charlie Austin’s winning strike at home to Sunderland remains the R’s only goal to date.

Austin is given odds of 9/2 to score in the 90 minutes at Old Trafford.
