Still, Spieth has been inspired at his first Ryder Cup and although McDowell is an experienced campaigner who has played well enough, the Northern Irishman was one of only four Europeans to lose their singles two years ago.

Europe’s best player at Gleneagles, Rose’s Midas touch with the putter on Saturday morning’s fourballs saw him record arguably the finest round of his career.

Winning a third straight match alongside partner Henrik Stenson, the Englishman turned in seven birdies and would be the man every American was hoping to avoid.

Martin Kaymer to beat Bubba Watson @ 1/1

Two major champions go toe-to-toe in the sixth scheduled match, but so far it’s only the US Open not the Masters winner who has registered any points, as Kaymer has halved two of three matches.

The German of course famously holed the winning putt on Sunday at Medinah and although Watson is capable of similar heroics, he’s looked out of sorts in Scotland and is 0-2 from previous Ryder Cup singles.

Victor Dubuisson to beat Zach Johnson @ 11/10

Europe’s most impressive rookie goes out last against veteran campaigner Johnson and judging by the way he’s taken to Ryder Cup golf, the Frenchman is fancied to round off a memorable debut in style.

Unused in either morning session, McDowell’s partner played brilliantly to see off American power couples Phil Mickelson and Keegan Bradley and Jimmy Walker and Rickie Fowler in consecutive foursomes.
