West Ham v Liverpool: Familiar foe to burst more bubbles in London

| 19.09.2014

It’s a fixture that has not been kind to West Ham in recent years, with the Upton Park club tasting victory against Liverpool just twice in 23 meetings since the turn of the century, but with a revival going on in E13, could we see a change this time?

Alas, we think probably not, but following some encouraging performances, we believe they could go closer than their 10/3 odds imply.

Here are our three picks for the best bets for Saturday’s late kick-off.

Steven Gerrard to score anytime @ 13/8

Steven Gerrard. It’s a name that will send a shiver down the spine of West Ham supporters, after his late strike took the 2006 FA Cup final into extra time and ultimately penalties, resulting in heartache for the Londoners.

The Liverpool skipper seems to enjoy playing the Hammers, having netted eight times in his 18 starts against them, a return of a goal every 2.25 games.

Considering Gerrard’s career record has him scoring approximately once every four games, there must be something about the claret and blue shirts that gets him riled up.

Liverpool to win and both teams to score @ 11/5

Sam Allardyce has recently slammed West Ham’s home form, stating they “really should have won against Tottenham” and followed it up with how his side were “abysmal” when they took on Southampton two weeks later.

But while they may struggle to get anything out of this game, Big Sam’s apparent new style of play could see the home side nick a goal or two.

The last four meetings between these sides at the Boleyn Ground have seen both teams find the net, and while Liverpool should have enough to claim the three points, Irons supporters should at least have some moments to savour.

Liverpool to win 3-2 @ 20/1

Following on along the same thought process as the previous bet, those wishing to have a dabble on the Correct Score market could do far worse than plumping for a 3-2 away win.

The Reds have come out on top in five goal thrillers in two of their last four visits to east London and from what we have seen of both teams so far this season, a treble of the same scoreline is hard to rule out.

While Hammers fans have been pleased with the more fluid, attacking football that has been visible in their games against Hull and Crystal Palace in particular this season, the tendency for them to play it out from the back, has left them susceptible to a counter attack.

In midweek Bulgarian minnows Ludogorets showed how simple it was to slice through the Liverpool backline, and with the likes of Enner Valencia and Diafra Sakho looking like clicking, a brace of goals is not out of the question.
