Chelsea in cruise control after Champions League win

Published:

Chelsea cemented their position as English favourites to win the Champions League with a 1-0 win over Sporting last night.

With Schalke drawing with Maribor in the other fixture Chelsea now top the group and are priced at 1/10 to run out Group G winners.

Next up for the Blues are back-to-back games against Maribor and six points from those fixtures will be enough to see the Premier League giants sail through to the knockout stage of the competition.

Chelsea manager Jose Mourinho, has warned his team not to take the points for granted but revealed he expects his side to qualify with games to spare by putting Maribor to the sword home and away.

“Because of the other draw we put ourselves not in a ‘comfortable’ position but in one where we can control our own destiny,” he told reporters.

“We now play two games against Maribor and, if we manage to secure six points, that would be 10 and job done. Now we have just to focus on beating Maribor, which I believe is not easy. To draw in Germany means something.”

Chelsea are now a 6/1 shot to lift the Champions League and make Mourinho the first manager to lift the trophy with three different clubs, making the west London outfit the runaway favourites as far as Premier League teams are concerned.

Manchester City have just one point from the available six after being pegged to a 1-1 draw with Roma at the Etihad and Manuel Pellegrini’s side are now priced at 14/1 to go all the way.

Arsenal face Galatasaray tonight looking for their first points of the campaign, but the 2-0 loss to Dortmund on matchday one has seen Arsene Wenger’s men slide out to 25/1.

Liverpool are slightly longer at 28/1 despite winning their opening fixture against Ludogorets and that price could be longer still in the morning if their trip to Basel proves as tough as when Manchester United and Chelsea last travelled to Switzerland.
