A way to go for Man Utd’s strike force to be best in the Prem

Having secured back-to-back wins for the first time this season, Manchester United’s campaign looks to be getting back on track.

And with their leading attacking trio of Wayne Rooney, Robin Van Persie and Radamel Falcao getting on the scoresheet for their countries over the course of the week there have been one or two eyebrow-raising claims from the United camp.

Midfielder Ander Herrera went as far to state that he thinks they have “the best three strikers in the world here”.

Is the Spaniard getting ahead of himself? Probably.

With Diego Costa netting nine in his first seven Premier League games, and Sergio Aguero continuing in good form, they have competition in English football, even before we get to the likes of Mssrs. Ronaldo and Messi.

To go even further, is this Manchester crop even the best strike force to grace Old Trafford in the Premier League era?

We look at some of the other contenders.

Mark Hughes and Eric Cantona – 1992 to 1995

This pairing was a perfect example of players complimenting them to achieve a greater good.

Hughes provided the physical presence, capable of scrapping to win back any apparent lost causes, but also clinical in front of goal.

Cantona meanwhile acted as the poster boy, bringing that European flair and chipping in with those magical moments that would shape the mid-90s Premier League.

Andy Cole and Dwight Yorke – 1998 to 2001

While they were both at the club until 2002, it was the three years before then, prior to Ruud van Nistelrooy’s arrival, that these two created one of the most well-revered strike partnerships in modern football.

In the two and a half seasons that they acted as the battering ram of choice at the Theatre of Dreams, Cole and York contributed 123 goals between them, with their understanding a major influence on 1999’s treble winning campaign.

Wayne Rooney and Cristiano Ronaldo – 2004 to 2009

While Wazza’s relationship with RVP and Falcao could become a devastating new triple-threat in the top-flight, the years that he played alongside Ronaldo yielded were undoubtedly his most successful so far.

Both arrived at the club as teenagers, boasting raw talent, but needed channelling in the right manner. And boy did they do that. With 189 goals in their time together at the club Rooney and Ronaldo went on to develop into two of the world’s best that we see today.
