Vettel to be best of the rest in our Russian GP best bets
Published:The stakes couldn’t be higher as the Formula One bandwagon heads to Russia for the first time in the World Championship’s history.
Lewis Hamilton has edged ahead of his teammate in the Drivers’ Championship courtesy of three straight wins, but we think it’s too hard to call which of the pair will triumph in Sochi, preferring to pick out the man who will roll in just behind the Mercedes.
Here are our three Russian Grand Prix best bets.
With the two Mercedes sharing all but one of the poles so far this season, this is as much of a two-horse race as you’re going to find in Formula One, and the German’s odds look generous compared to Hamilton’s 4/7.
Rosberg has taken seven of the past 10 pole positions and the length of the Sochi track might play into his hands.
Only Silverstone and Spa are longer than the Russian track, two circuits where Rosberg qualified fastest earlier in the season.
The four-time world champion has finally showed some form in the past couple of races, with only Mercedes cars beating him across the line in Singapore and Japan.
Vettel beat both his teammate Daniel Ricciardo and Valtteri Bottas, who are the joint favourites in this market at 3/1, across the line at both circuits.
That was despite qualifying behind Ricciardo on each occasion, and behind Bottas in Japan, where Vettel charged from ninth on the grid to a third-place finish.
The Frenchman has finished in the points in both of the past two races, with his performance in Singapore especially impressing as he came from 12th on the grid to claim sixth.
As mentioned above, Sochi is the third-longest track on the calendar, as this bodes well for Vergne’s chances as he claimed a top 10 spot at both the British and Belgian Grand Prix.
