Wilshere lay-off deals another blow to Arsenal’s top four chances

| 26.11.2014

Arsenal’s chances of success have been handed a huge blow with the news England midfielder Jack Wilshere is set to be sidelined for at least two months.

The 22-year-old was forced from the field in the Gunners’ 2-1 defeat to Manchester United with an ankle injury after Paddy McNair’s late challenge.

And Arsene Wenger has confirmed Wilshere, who has found form for both club and country in recent weeks, will see a specialist to determine how long he will be out of action.

“I don’t want to say how bad it is because I’m not a specialist medically,” manager Arsene Wenger said.

“The first news is that he will be out for the next few games. To know how long he will need to see a specialist.”

Arsenal, who find themselves 15 points behind Chelsea, are under serious pressure after suffering their worst start to a league campaign in 32 years.

The north London club have managed just four wins in the league so far and have picked up just 17 points from 12 games, but they are still odds on with Ladbrokes to finish in the top four at 4/6.

But their task will be made all the harder as they look set to be without Wilshere for at least eight weeks but if he requires surgery to repair ankle ligaments it could be more like three months on the sidelines.

First, the Gunners, who are already without Mesut Ozil and Mathieu Debuchy for the foreseeable future, must do without the England star as they look to book their place in the knockout phase of the Champions League when they take on Borussia Dortmund at the Emirates Stadium.

Arsenal, who need just a point to qualify for the next round, are 6/4 for victory, while Dortmund are 9/5 to repeat their 2013 win in north London with the draw available at 5/2.
