Henderson’s French import intriguing flying high on UK debut

The International Hurdle and Caspian Caviar Gold Cup may suggest that all the action worth focusing on is at Cheltenham on Saturday, but that is far from the case.

With a couple of Grade 2s at Doncaster, it would be foolish to overlook the action at Town Moor.

Here are our fancies…

Cheltenham 14:00 – Edgardo Sol

While Caid Du Berlais is a rightful favourite for the Caspian Caviar Gold Cup, he price doesn’t leave much to the imagination, so a chance is taken on one at a bigger price.

A switch to Emma Lavelle seems to a sparked a new lease of life into Edgardo Sol.

Finishing in the Old Roan Chase on reappearance was good enough, but the fact that the winner Wishfull Thinking won the Peterbrough Chase next time out, and the horse in fourth at Aintree, Uxizandre won nicely at Cheltenham last month.

He was eighth in the Paddy Power Gold Cup off a mark 1lb higher, and although he will need to improve with the winner that day, he looks well worth an each way interest at a nice price.

Doncaster 14:15 – Peace and Co

This could be one to take on reputation, as clearly, Nicky Henderson thinks a lot about this French import.

In saying that “there is not a lot between” Peace and Co and current Triumph Hurdle second favourite Hargam, says it all, and he could have an easier than usual Grade 2 to get off the mark in the UK.

In fact, pitching him in Graded company on his British debut says it all.

The son of Falco finished ahead of two subsequent winners on his only start in France, and clearly has talent.

With Henderson boasting a 34% strike rate with his hurdlers on Town Moor, he could be one to follow.

Doncaster 14:50 – Killala Quay

Charlie Longsdon’s charge was a bit outpaced behind Puffin Billy over 2m3f last time out, so warrants plenty of attention stepped up to 3m.

Despite lacking the toe to challenge his rival last time out, he was 10l clear of Boondooma who gave Melodic Rendezvous something to think about on the latter’s chase debut.

He was fifth behind Beat That over the smaller obstacles in the Sefton Novices Hurdle at the Grand National meeting this year, so pretty strong form.

That followed a fourth in the Neptune at Cheltenham, when he was beaten a more than respectable 6l by the extremely special Faugheen.

The soft ground will suit him more than some in this small field contest.
