Marco Boriello latest target to improve Sunderland’s attacking threat

| 29.12.2014

They may have only lost five games this season, but Sunderland find themselves struggling in 14th place in the Premier League, much of it down to their lack of cutting edge.

The Black Cats have drawn 11 of their 19 matches thus far, and have failed to score nine times.

It is fairly obvious to see where the Wearside outfit is lacking this season.

But who could Gus Poyet bring in to improve their lacklustre attack in January?

We profile a quintet that could be of interest…

Marco Borriello

The latest player to be linked with a move to the north east of England is the former Italy international.

Currently at Roma, the 32-year-old has fallen out of favour at the Stadio Olimpico outfit, and has made just 52 appearances in four-and-a-half years at the club.

With 12 goals in that time as well as 12 in 28 during a loan spell at Genoa, he clearly has goalscoring talent, and could be the subject of a cut-price bid in January with his contract expiring in the summer.

Fabio Borini

Gus Poyet has made no secret of the fact that he would like to bring another Italian back to the club after impressing during a loan spell last season.

The Liverpool striker turned down a permanent move before the season started, but has since made just three starts for the Reds.

And with Brendan Rodgers reportedly looking at bringing Gonzalo Higuain to Anfield, he game time could be hit further, maybe he will be more open to a move this time round?

Yaya Sanogo

Momentum is gathering in reports that Arsene Wenger is preparing to send Sanogo out on loan in the upcoming window.

The French under 21 international has made just six appearances for the Gunners this season, and competition for his signature is sure to be fierce.

But with the opportunity to stay in the Premier League, he may well be tempted to head north if the offer came in for him.

Nadir Cifti

Recently linked with a move to Celtic, the Premier League could be a tempting offer for the Dundee United striker.

The Turkish forward has netted eight times in the Scottish Premiership this season, and is well on his way to beating last season’s total of 11.

He will need to step up if he is to cut it in the Premier League, but at 22-years-old has plenty of time for improvement.

Danny Ings

Probably the longest shot of our five, but the bite he would bring to the Black Cats frontline is obvious.

Ings has been a shining light for Burnley this season, contributing four of their 14 goals as they look to stave off relegation.

His contract is up at the end of the season, so the Clarets may be tempted to cash in on him while they can.

But even if Sean Dyche approved a deal, Sunderland would have competition from ‘bigger’ teams for the former Bournemouth man.
