Red Bull bid could have wings if Leeds owner can’t uphold appeal

Red Bull Salzburg, Red Bull Leipzig, New York Red Bulls, how about Red Bull Leeds?

After Leeds’ Italian owner Massimo Cellino was disqualified for failing to pass the Football League’s ‘fit and proper person’ ownership test, drinks company Red Bull have been linked with a takeover bid.

Cellino, who took over the Yorkshire giants in April, is planning an appeal against the decision but will actually be free to return to the club in March, when his current conviction for tax evasion would be deemed exhausted.

It is a complex situation Leeds face once again, but rumours linking the energy drink gurus with a potential takeover gathered a lick when Cellino reportedly met with a representative of Red Bull in the week before the ruling was made on December 1st.

Cellino insisted he would resist a full takeover by the company which already owns three high-profile professional clubs around the world, rather seek some investment to aid the re-purchasing of Elland Road.

However, given the financial clout that Red Bull possess, any hitches in Cellino’a appeal process or further dirt being dug up on the former Cagliari president before the March 18th return date, could yet act as catalyst for a bid.

For the Leeds faithful they will just be crying out for some much-needed stability whatever happens in the boardroom, but at least the latest man in the dugout is experiencing some joy.

Neil Redfearn oversaw a brilliant 2-0 win over Championship leaders Derby at Elland Road, the Whites’ second league win in three matches to lift them into 15th.

An improving Leeds travel to high-flying Ipswich in second next, where they are deemed 10/3 shots to make it two massive wins on the spin.
