Forget Bony, back these 3 secondary forwards for AfCoN top scorer

| 16.01.2015

Each of the last three African Cup of Nations top scorers have represented the eventual winners of the competition, which will come as no real surprise as these players would have had maximum minutes to find the target and been playing for teams in good form.

New Manchester City recruit Wilfried Bony is the understandable favourite to top the scoring charts in Equatorial Guinea at 6/1, but we have found three better bets and all are forwards that are not the focal point of their respective attacks.

Salomon Kalou (Ivory Coast) @ 12/1

The Ivory Coast were the top scorers during qualifying with 13 goals and Kalou was responsible for the most with four strikes.

Although Bony will lead the line, Kalou is an equally destructive force from the right flank and in his last four international appearances, the former Chelsea man has contributed five goals.

If the Ivory Coast are to better their quarter-final result at the last African Cup of Nations, Kalou’s goals will be critical.

Yacine Brahimi (Algeria) @ 16/1

Algeria are deserved favourites to win the competition, they held Germany for 120 minutes at the World Cup and retain the nucleus of that team, even if manager Vahid Halilhodzic has been replaced by shrewd former Lorient tactician Christian Gourcuff.

Brahimi has been given the free role by Gourcuff behind Islam Slimani and like Kalou, the Porto creator was his nation’s top scorer during qualifying.

They are in the most difficult group in Equatorial Guinea, which is a slight negative to the goal threat of both Brahimi and Algeria as a team.

Malick Evouna (Gabon) @ 40/1

Group A is undoubtedly the least competitive group and the winners of this four-team battle should also have a more-than-winnable quarter-final.

Gabon have the capabilities of springing surprises, especially with Borussia Dortmund’s Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang in their attack.

However, at more than double Aubameyang’s 16/1 top-scorer quote is forward partner in crime Evouna, who netted three times in qualifying.
