Chris Gayle was out of form before he faced Zimbabwe in the Cricket World Cup. He’d averaged just 14.42 in 19 one-day internationals since his last hundred in the format, and scored just one fifty.
Chris Gayle is in form now. He has just recorded the fastest ever 50-over double hundred and the first to be hit in a World Cup. In 147 bludgeoned balls at Canberra he was 59 runs short of matching the 274 he’d scored in his previous 19 innings.
During his 215, in which he was caught on the final ball of the innings, the brutish left-hander was involved in a number of records.
He equalled the ODI mark for most sixes in an innings and set a new record for the highest partnership in the format during a 372-run stand with Marlon Samuels, who ended 133 not out.
It was Gayle who stole the show though, as he peppered the boundary like only he can, but didn’t truly cut loose until after scoring his first hundred.
