Liverpool get back on the goalkeeper grind with World Cup star

Published:

The January transfer window has come and gone without Liverpool managing to buy a new goalkeeper, which means only one thing for followers of their transfer news; there will be endless stories linking them to one until the summer.

Almost as long-running as Brendan Rodgers’ insistence that all defensive players must be more refined on the ball than pure lump-it merchants, is his desire to bring in a shot-stopper to rival Simon Mignolet.

A long list of potential competitors to the Belgian’s gloves have been mooted, but as yet the former Sunderland man only has average Australian net-minder Brad Jones to worry about, which is like fretting about falling into a foam pit at the gymnasium.

He’ll have to watch his step a jot more should the 11/2 top-four chasers manage to land the latest name linked to an Anfield switch though, as Rodgers looks to land Mexican World Cup hero Guillermo Ochoa.

After keeping Louis van Gaal’s Holland at bay for nigh on 90 minutes during the last 16 in Brazil (a performance you can relive at the bottom of the page), the 29-year-old earned himself a move from French club Ajaccio to Malaga in La Liga, but has since had precious little game time.

Finding himself behind Carlos Kameni in Los Boquerones’ net, Ochoa has become so frustrated with his Spanish stint that he asked to leave, but was told he would have to stick January out before he could land any move.

The Mexican’s irritation will be music to the ears of Liverpool, who will surely seek to prise him away from La Rosaleda come the summer.
