Expect Liverpool boss’ latest Swansea return to herald goals

Published:

Liverpool boss Brendan Rodgers faces off against old club Swansea for the eighth time since leaving the Liberty Stadium in 2012, so there are plenty of pointers on offer as to how the Reds might get on.

After failing to win his first two games against his old employer, Rodgers has overseen four wins and a draw at the Liverpool helm in this fixture since, with each of the last quintet of contests containing over 2.5 goals.

The visitors are 21/20 favourites merely to win the match, but backing them to do so with both teams scoring, as has been the result in each of their past four meetings, looks a better bet at 16/5.

Daniel Sturridge has found the net four times in his three matches against Swansea as a Liverpool player, so 17/10 about the 25-year-old getting off the mark seems reasonable. It’s 9/1 that the former Chelsea striker doubles up, as he did at home to Garry Monk’s side last term.

Former Liverpool midfielder Jonjo Shelvey was the star of the show at home to his old side early last season, not quite for all the wrong reasons as he did manage to score and set up Michu for a goal as well as help the Reds to both of theirs.

He may not be firing on all cylinders this term, with just a couple of strikes in the Premier League at Chelsea and Southampton, but at 19/5 the follically-challenged Romford boy must be worth a nibble.

A whopping ratio of four of the last five games between these two have seen at least 3.5 goals trouble the scoreboard operator, so 9/4 about the same again may be preferred to the safer 19/20 on over 2.5 strikes.
