Hipster Tipster: Barcelona and Bas Dost the orders of the day

| 03.03.2015

After a weekend spent watching the biggest and best in La Liga, the Bundesliga, Serie A and Ligue 1 strut their stuff, I think I may have found the continent’s answer to our very own Harry Kane.

When Wolfsburg announced the signing of free agent Nicklas Bendtner I had genuine concerns for the Volkswagen-backed club – would they mount a serious challenge on the Europa League and what of their DFB Pokal prospects?

I had, of course, temporarily forgotten about Bas Dost, the man who previously scored about a million goals in Holland and has been doing his best to out-do Tottenham’s boy-wonder in the open mouth goal celebration stakes.

And the Dutchman is the cornerstone of my special midweek Euro fourfold which also features wins for Barcelona and Napoli and is priced at just over 24/1.

Wolfsburg to beat Red Bull Leipzig @ 8/13

The Wolves tore into Werder Bremen like a big sweaty footballing version of Thomas Brolin at the cheese counter last weekend and duly delivered a 5-3 win that was far from mature but offered up plenty of entertainment. Dost scored twice that day and could be in for more Dutch delight methinks!

Barcelona to beat Villarreal @ 8/13

Barca sunk the Yellow Submarine with a 3-1 win in the first leg and will be expected to progress past a side they have beaten in each of their previous five meetings by a total aggregate score of 12-6! It could be time for Villarreal to find a nickname less associated with sinking into oblivion.

Napoli to beat Lazio @ 19/10

Dubbed a Spanish Waiter by Chelsea fans, Napoli fans will be hoping another Coppa Italia is on the menu with Rafa Benitez at the helm and after beating Lazio in each of their previous four meetings a victory at the Stadio Olimpico could represent the starter.

PSG to draw with Monaco @ 12/5

With no Zlatan to call on, these two played out the dullest of 0-0 draws last Sunday in Ligue 1 so imagine my delight when it was revealed that the two would meet again in the cup. Each of their last six meetings have ended as draws and another borefest looks likely in Paris this week.

Hipster Tipster

Educated in the three Rs – Romario, Ronaldo and Roberto Baggio – from an early age our resident Europhile football fan loves nothing more than sitting back in an IKEA POANG recliner with a selection of Serie A, Bundesliga, Eredivisie and Ligue 1 football at his disposal. All thoughts are his own, though some can also be attributed to the great 21st century mind that is Zlatan Ibrahimovic. He would struggle to write good copy on a rainy Tuesday night in Stoke.
