It’s official – no one cares about the Capital One Cup

| 02.03.2015

Back when the League Cup was sponsored by ale purveyor Worthington, football fans nationwide dubbed it the Worthless Cup and it seems little has changed.

Sunday saw Chelsea beat Tottenham 2-0 at Wembley Stadium but according to our report the game wasn’t even the biggest to be played that day, let alone one of the biggest of the season.

Ladbrokes’ weekend poll asked football fans to vote for the biggest game of the day on Sunday and according to the votes the cup final finished a distant third!

Liverpool’s 2-1-win over Manchester City, courtesy of a sublime Philippe Coutinho strike, and England’s sorry defeat at the hands of Ireland in the Six Nations were both deemed to be more significant events, each taking 36 per cent of the overall vote.

The League Cup final, which saw Jose Mourinho maintain his record of having never lost a domestic final as Chelsea manager, attracted fewer than one in four of the votes with a total take of just 21 per cent.

This just goes to show that if your club has more pressing priorities, be it winning the league, qualifying for Europe or attempting to gain promotion or avoid relegation in any of the country’s leagues then the League Cup is little more than an unwanted distraction.

They could call it the “Nice Opportunity To Win Some Silverware If Your A Club Destined For Mid-Table Mediocrity Or A Big Club That Finds Itself In The Semis Cup” but it doesn’t exactly roll of the tongue does it?

As expected, footy fans north of the border showed their indifference to the English competition, with Celtic’s meeting with Aberdeen gaining a healthy seven per cent of the votes.

Arsenal’s Premier League meeting with Everton failed to attract a single vote, but the more damning verdict is the apparent pointlessness of the “other” domestic cup!
