Poll reaction: Phillips screamer is best goal so far

Published:

It may have had little impact on QPR’s 3-1 thrashing at the hands of Crystal Palace at the weekend but Matt Phillips’ 40-yard strike has been voted the goal of the season so far.

With Rangers seemingly drifting back down to the Championship the fact that Phillips took a staggering 67 per cent of the votes in the latest Ladbrokes poll will offer him little solace but in time he’ll reflect on the strike with immense pride and rightly so.

For anyone who is yet to see the Hoops star’s stunning consolation effort here it is:

Liverpool ace Philippe Coutinho took second place in the vote with 16 per cent for his stunning strike against Southampton at St Mary’s earlier this year.

While there is something strangely satisfying about seeing a strike glance the cross bar on its way in it seems this narrow margin of accuracy has seen Phillips’ strike gain far more affection.

Rounding out the top three was Arsenal’s French hot shot Olivier Giroud, who took eight per cent of the votes for putting the finishing touches to a typically great passing move from the Gunners in their 3-0 win over West Ham.

Ayoze Perez and Enner Valencia rounded out the top five and it was a close call to see which was the better of the players’ strikes.

Perez’s took five per cent of the vote for his neat flick to finish off a nice phase of Newcastle play against West Brom and it was deemed marginally better than Valencia’s powerful drive against Hull, which set the Hammers on their way to a valuable point.
