How Twitter reacted to Liverpool’s 2-1 win over Manchester City

Published:

Chelsea had double reason to celebrate this Sunday after seemingly wrapping up the title without kicking a ball, thanks to Liverpool’s victory over Manchester City.

Oh, and the Blues also won the League Cup, thus guaranteeing themselves, or more likely Tottenham, a place in the Europa League – the Prince Harry of continental competitions.

And though Sky Sports did their best to try and convince us that the Milk/Rumbelows/Coca Cola/Carling/ Capital One Cup final was where ‘it’ was at, we all knew the big game was taking place at Anfield.

Fortunately, those ever-helpful Twitter users felt similarly with a whole host of amusing and engaging Tweets delivered before, during and after the action on Merseyside.

Squawka were among those to offer up an interesting tit-bit before the game, which pitched the contest as a brotherly reunion of sorts – except this would be the first reunion to involve these two, if that makes sense.

Meanwhile, some were speculation on just what Brendan Rodgers was doing differently to warrant the recent upturn in form Liverpool have been enjoying. Here is one rather interesting theory…

The game itself was a tale of two Liverpool screamers, with the first goal from Jordan Henderson a real thing of beauty.

Some, like Bleacher Report, were keen to highlight the excellent build-up play for the goal and decided to express their admiration through the medium of BBC teatime quiz Pointless.

Edin Dzeko then levelled the game up with a fine goal that also saw the Bosnian reach a Premier League milestone few would have predicted. Your move Wilfried Bony.

But Liverpool would not be denied. with Phillipe Coutinho coming back to haunt the club whom he scored against last season. As with last term, the strike is likely to have a major bearing on the eventual winners of the Premier League and, like last season, those winners are unlikely to be the Reds but it still prompted a raft of stats. WhoScored.com went with cold hard numbers.

But Opta Joe probably won out on this one after producing a pretty picture to highlight the midfielder’s impact.

The rest of us were too busy enjoying the goal itself, with this great bit of fan footage offering a unique perspective on proceedings.

And with Coutinho proving the saviour, fans were simply itching to wheel out THAT video of the Brazilian “warming up” during the Reds’ Europa League meeting with Besiktas.

City fans, meanwhile, could at least take solace from the beaming visage of former club hero Kolo Toure.

Give that man a knighthood!
