Billy Elliot star and Scorsese pick among Spiderman contenders

It seems like only yesterday that there was talk of Tobey Maguire starring in a fourth Spiderman film under director Sam Raimi with the pair possessing something of the Midas touch after spawning a highly-successful and lucrative trilogy of films together.
But after falling out with the studio, those plans were scrapped in favour of a major reboot of the series that saw a new director and star introduced.
Yet just two films on from Andrew Garfield donning the suit so synonymous with the Marvel Comics character and Marc Webb behind the camera – it would appear that change is afoot again.
Rumours suggest Sony were disappointed by the numbers ‘The Amazing Spiderman 2’ achieved at the Box Office and are now looking to commence yet a second reboot of the flailing franchise.
Reports suggest Spiderman could feature in Captain America: Civil War before Sony and Marvel commence work on a collaborative effort that could yet be another origins story for the world’s most famous web-slinger.
The next Spiderman, therefore, is likely to be a much younger actor with Garfield ejected from the role in favour of a fresher-faced unknown.
At present, Ladbrokes has 18-year-old Londoner Asa Butterfield as the market favourite to land the role at 6/4.
It follows reports suggesting that Marvel executives are keen on bringing the youngster on board, after he impressed in The Boy in the Striped Pyjamas and Martin Scorsese’s Hugo.
Butterfield could yet face competition from a fellow resident of the capital though, with Tom Holland out at 4/1 to land the role.
Also 18, Holland has impressed most notably in a stage version of Billy Elliott the Musical as well as in films like The Impossible and How I Live Now.
The slightly older Nat Wolff also remains in the running at 3/1 with Ladbrokes and could yet surprise given his notable status in the US.
A 20-year-old musician from LA, Wolff is a regular on the kids’ television channel Nickelodeon and his most notable movie credit to date is The Fault in Our Stars.
Canadian actor Liam James is also among the front-runners for the role, with the 18-year-old familiar to film fans after a breakthrough performance as the lead character in the 2013 coming-of-age US comedy The Way,Way Back .
Yet while Garfield’s time may be up as Spiderman, the betting suggests the role could remain in British hands.
