Everton looking to beat former boss to Sammy Ameobi signing

Published:

He may have left Goodison Park two years ago, but David Moyes still looks to be having an impact on the dealings at Everton, with the Real Sociedad boss set to go toe-to-toe with his former employers in the transfer market.

Both the Toffees and the San Sebastien outfit are, according to the Telegraph, set to battle it out to sign Newcastle’s Sammy Ameobi in the summer.

The winger is available on a free transfer at the end of the current campaign, with his contract on Tyneside set to expire.

Having really broken through into the Magpies’ first team this season, making 22 appearances, it would perhaps seem a strange time to move, but it appears there are plans for a clear-out in the close season.

The 22-year-old has just two goals and two assists to his name in those 24 times he has put on the black and white stripes throughout 2014-15, with some fans claiming his form is not good enough to warrant a starting berth at St James’ Park.

And although the younger brother of former Toon idol Shola has remarked about how he is keen to stay with the club, that decision may soon be taken out of his hands.

A move to Everton could see the ex-England under-21 international slot straight into Roberto Martinez’s side, with on loan Aaron Lennon set to return to Tottenham, while fellow forward Kevin Mirallas is attracting plenty of interest from elsewhere.

With only three players scoring more than three times this season the Toffees do look in need of competition in the attacking third, and while Ameobi’s form hasn’t set the world alight, he may be a risk worth taking on a free transfer.

The lure of staying in the Premier League may give the Merseyside club the upper hand over Moyes and Sociedad, but Martinez and Co. also look to have competition from elsewhere in the shape of West Brom.
