Lack of firepower suggests low score as Newcastle host Spurs

Published:

Like a punch-drunk boxer, Newcastle are wilting badly as the Premier League enters the final few rounds and they seriously need to apply the smelling salts, starting with the visit of Tottenham, else risk the most undesirable of finishes to the season.

Many factors have contributed to their alarming slump, but the facts are Newcastle need to stop the rot now, with only seven points separating the Magpies from the red zone, as they stare a sixth straight top-flight defeat in the face.

Given their horrendous form John Carver’s men start the game as 11/5 outsiders for the win despite home advantage, with the draw at 12/5 and a Spurs victory the favoured outcome at 13/10.

However, as awful as their hosts have been, Mauricio Pochettino’s side can hardly be backed to justify their rather skinny odds with any vigour.

Carrying over from a flat performance at Burnley which ended 0-0, the Lilywhites were deservedly beaten at home by Aston Villa last time out, having failed to find the necessary spark.

Fatigue is certainly one explanation, given Spurs (52) have played more games than any other Premier League side this season.

This is not an excuse which will sit well with their fans though, who will also point to the overreliance on Harry Kane to grab the goals.

This lack of goals in both camps looks to be the theme most capable of rewarding Ladbrokes customers , with Spurs failing to find the net in 202 minutes away from home and Newcastle, still without the suspended Papiss Cisse, finding the net only once during this painful run.

Bets on 0-1 goals in the match at 5/2, both teams failing to find the net at 11/10 and under 2.5 total goals at 10/11, all appeal given the evidence.
