Manchester City target shows his Champions League quality

Having already tipped up Porto to beat Bayern Munich in the first-leg of their Champions League quarter final, the Ladbrokes News team was pretty chuffed to see the Portuguese side put in a performance worthy of the famous team of 1987.

But the game was also a good one for fans of the Premier League with several of the hosts’ most impressive stars shining on the biggest European stage.

Ricardo Quaresma may have already had his chance at forging a career in England with Chelsea but there were plenty of other notable talents to shout about.

Jackson Martinez will have gained the most plaudits after scoring Porto’s third, potentially decisive goal in the 3-1 win, but for Manchester City fans it was perhaps more heartening to see Hector Herrera putting in a shift in the midfield.

The 24-year-old Mexico international has been linked with a summer move to the Etihad and showed plenty of class against the Bundesliga giants.

Close to making the scoreline more emphatic himself, a goal would have been just rewards for Herrera, who has been among Porto’s star performers in the tournament this season.

A classy central midfielder, the Mexican has added goals to his game in Europe this season, scoring four times in the Champions League already this term.

It comes off the back of a summer in which he starred for Mexico at the World Cup, helping El Tri advance to the knockout phase of the competition.

Valued at a steep €40m by his Portuguese employers, Herrera could be the ideal acquisition to replace the potentially outgoing Yaya Toure at the Etihad.

With City set to undergo a major revamp this summer after a season to forget in the Premier League, the 24-year-old may have just made himself one of the club’s main targets.
