Channel 4 Racing: Get on Gosden’s good thing in Newbury’s third

Published:

Newbury’s Lockinge Stakes, featuring some of last year’s top Classic contenders, is the showpiece event covered by Channel 4 Racing’s team this week, but many of the UK and Ireland’s best and brightest trainers will also show up for a fine card at Newmarket.

We’ve drilled down into the data to bring you three brilliant bets on the box as the flat campaign continues apace:

NAP – 14.35 Newbury – Waady @ 4/1

Only four favourites have taken this race over the past 10 years, but each of the last four winners have been priced at 7/2 or shorter.

Waady looks likely to go off at around those odds, and looks a fair bet to complete a four-timer under in-form jockey Paul Hanagan.

John Gosden’s inmate struck twice in April, having finished last season with victory over 5f at Sandown. A furlong further should be well within this three-year-old’s scope.

Next Best – 15.25 Newmarket – Field Game @ 8/1

Over the past decade, the average winning weight in this 6f sprint has been just over 9-0, and Field Game is the only challenger that gets in at this mark.

Hughie Morrison’s runner claimed two wins and three seconds in six races last term, which suggests he shouldn’t be an each-way price here. Get on.

Lively Longshot – 15.45 Newbury – Tullius @ 20/1

Our King of Stats flagged up last year’s 2,000 Guineas springer Night Of Thunder as the likely winner of the Lockinge Stakes at 5/2, but at a massive price this 2014 runner-up must be worth a nibble.

Andrew Balding’s seven-year-old has finished inside the first four in each of his last eight races, and 21 times in 26 career outings, so you’re likely to get a stout run for your money at least.

Furthermore, with Ladbrokes paying 1/4 odds on the first four home in this Group 1, hopes of posting profits are heightened.
