French Open day 2: In-form Murray to breeze into second round

Published:

The Brits are taking over Roland Garros for the second day of the French Open, with Andy Murray the headline act of five matches involved players from the UK.

We’ve steered clear of the lesser British lights in our best bets for the day, but we’re expecting the imperious Scot to blast his way into the second round.

Here are our best bets for day two of the French Open.

Andy Murray (-9.5) to beat Facundo Arguello @ 8/11

The Scot will have little trouble seeing off Argentine lucky loser Arguello given his recent excellent displays on clay.

Murray won in Munich before dropping just one set en route to winning the Madrid Masters, including a straight sets victory over home favourite Rafael Nadal.

The two-time major winner withdrew with fatigue while aiming to make it three in a row at the Rome Masters, but he now seems as comfortable as anyone in the game on clay.

Roberta Vinci to beat Alize Cornet @ 10/11

The Italian should have the edge in this tight first-round encounter, with a 4-0 head-to-head record advantage over Cornet thus far in her career.

The most recent of Vinci’s wins against the 29th-seed came earlier this month at the Madrid Masters, a loss that continued Cornet’s tough run on clay this season.

The French player might have the benefit of home advantage in Paris, but that isn’t going to be enough to see her through this one.

Luca Vanni to beat Bernard Tomic @ 5/4

The Australian player has never looked comfortable at Roland Garros, exiting in the first round of four of his five appearances at the French Open.

Vanni might be ranked outside the top 100, but he bested Tomic at the recent Madrid Masters on clay, and is far more at home on the surface than his opponent.
