Former Italian U21 midfielder Dessena on Watford’s radar

Published:

Watford have begun their search for summer reinforcements by strengthening their interest in Italian midfielder Daniele Dessena.

With the club’s owners also at the helm of Udinese, you’d expect the Vicarage Road outfit to be doing plenty of deals in the Mediterranean, although Cagliari appears to be their first stop in that venture.

The 28-year-old is looking increasingly likely to leave the recently relegated side after being attacked by some of the clubs ‘Ultras’ in a nightclub back in April.

They were reportedly upset at the performances the players of the Sardinian club were putting in, and with those showings not improving in the meantime; Serie B football is what will be gracing the Stadio Sant’Elia in 2015-16.

Tutto Mercato Web have revealed that a number of high profile players are set to follow the club’s chairman Francesco Marroccu out of the door this summer, and the Hornets look the likely destination for Dessena.

They will however, have competition for his signature with Atalanta and Palermo reportedly open to extending the player’s stay in his home country.

The defensive midfielder has been a mainstay in the centre of I Rossoblus midfield in the last few years, making 129 appearances for the side in two separate spells, scoring eight goals in the process.

However, it is his defensive abilities that are the former Italy under-21 international’s strengths.

Dessena’s work-rate would surely adorn himself to the Hornets fans, with his tackling and ability to break down opposing team’s attacks before they have a chance to develop standing out.

With a new manager search on the cards, and plenty of recruitment set to make hay at Vicarage Road, it could certainly be a busy summer for the Hertfordshire club.
