Spurs want to offset Lloris loss with international star

| 05.05.2015

The likelihood of Hugo Lloris leaving Tottenham this summer has become greater, as the first rumours of who the Frenchman’s north-London replacement will be have started to emerge.

Spurs fans should have felt quietly confident of keeping their shot-stopping captain amid increased chatter of a switch to Manchester United, purely on the basis that the Lilywhites weren’t planning for his departure with a purchase of their own.

But as newspapers begin to report that Daniel Levy and co are scouting for new glovemen, it seems that Lloris could well be on his way out of White Hart Lane after all.

Both the Daily Mail and the Metro have run with reports that, following the former Lyon man’s departure to Old Trafford in the summer, Spurs will make a £10m move for Chelsea’s forgotten man Petr Cech.

Cech has found himself marginalised at Stamford Bridge following the arrival of Belgian youngster Thibaut Courtois and will likely seek a switch during the off season to find himself more regular playing time.

Should Lloris vacate the number one jersey at Tottenham, then there will be a real opportunity for Cech to secure a return to regular action over Michel Vorm next season.

Although Spurs’ Dutch understudy has his own designs on filling Lloris’ gloves, few could argue that Cech would be a far better option for Mauricio Pochettino should he manage to land the 32-year-old Pilsen native.

Bringing leadership qualities and a winning mentality to Spurs, Cech would be an ideal candidate to replace one of the few men in Tottenham’s squad with genuine Champions League class. Signing him would be a step in the right direction towards building a top-four team.

Whether the 112-cap international would be willing to play in the Europa League remains to be seen, while even that outcome is far from guaranteed at White Hart Lane, with Ladbrokes making Spurs far-from-concrete 4/9 chances for a top-six finish.
