Are West Ham on the verge of uncovering another Leverkusen gem?

West Ham are poised to bring Bayer Leverkusen’s Stefan Reinartz to Upton Park in the summer according to reports, as Alex Song’s future at the club looks increasingly in doubt.
On loan from Barcelona until the end of the campaign, the Cameroonian would have been top of the summer transfer list for many Hammers fans, but a pricey move now looks unlikely.
Instead the east Londoners have turned their attention to the three-capped German international, with his contract up in the coming months.
A move for the 26-year-old holding midfielder could be an inspired move if Reinartz is able to replicate the success of a number of other former Bayer midfielder.
The likes of Bernd Schneider, Michael Ballack and Toni Kroos all enjoyed excellent spells at the North Rhine-Westphalia club, and earmarked themselves as up there with some of the German greats.
Any such replication of that trio’s achievements will mean the Upton Park outfit could have a bargain on their hands.
Either way, the 6ft2in player has been a lucky charm for Leverkusen this year, as they have climbed up to fourth in the table, and could yet make the top three.
Even more so, in the nine starts he has made for the side this season, they have won six and drawn three, conceding just six goals in the process.
Also capable of playing at centre back, Reinartz’s defensive capabilities could lead the Hammers to see him as a perfect signing, adding versatility to their ranks.
The likes of Eintracht Frankfurt, Hamburg and Borussia Monchengladbach have reportedly shown an interest in securing his signature and keep him in the Bundesliga, but it appears West Ham are one step ahead of the game.
According to German newspaper the Rheinische Post the capital club have already submitted and official approach for the player, and could be sewn up in the next few weeks.
Having secured just their second Premier League victory in four months with a 1-0 victory over Burnley last weekend, the Hammers will be looking to end their season with a flourish to consolidate a mid-table position.
With a trip to a resurgent Aston Villa side up next, odds of 11/4 suggests recording a double could be out of their reach.
