Chelsea star in demand as Swansea join chase for his services

| 08.06.2015

A tried-and-tested transfer strategy of the Premier League’s middle tier is to pilfer the elite clubs’ fringe players with the promise of regular first-team action.

Ryan Bertrand at Southampton, Wilfried Zaha at Crystal Palace and Lukasz Fabianski at Swansea are just three examples of the rewards that such a recruitment method can bring.

As previous exponents of the approach recently, it’s unsurprising to see all three of those clubs now circling around a certain Chelsea striker as the start of the summer shopping spree arrives.

Loic Remy added two English honours to his personal trophy cabinet after making the very wise decision to swap QPR/Newcastle line-leading for west London bench-warming last season.

Yet the Frenchman began just six Premier League games under Jose Mourinho during the campaign, putting him among a group of players with the second-fewest starts for the Premier League champions.

On that basis, the trio of interested clubs will rightly believe they have a way in with the former Marseille goal-getter, however they may find that convincing him to ditch his plushy new gig is a tough nut to crack.

Remy proved himself to be an impressive second option for the Portuguese tactician, scoring seven top-flight goals.

He actually ended up making more appearances this term than he did on loan for Magpies the season before, by virtue of the fact that the Stamford Bridge club make deeper runs in more competitions than the average Premier League outfit.

However, Chelsea are certainly never adverse to selling their squad members and Swansea, who are the newest admirers of Remy’s talents, have enjoyed a breakout season under Garry Monk.

With a highest Premier League finish and record points tally to their name, the Welshmen can state a case of regular improvement in their attempts to acquire the 28-year-old, with the space left by Wilfried Bony still the obvious main selling point.
